The fusion of glamor and engineered technology takes center stage in designer Jack Irving’s creations. Irving, who dressed Lady Gaga, Paris Hilton and The Spice Girls for their comeback tour, presented an eccentric and disobedient collection, stunning his audience at the recent London Fashion Week 2022. It was presented by On|Off London.
The costume designer’s theatricality and love for infusing live performance technology into fashion has been embodied in the signature piece of his collection – an inflatable dress that takes the form of a jaw-dropping surreal sprawling alien, if you can call it that.
The first 30 seconds of the video revealed nothing of what this initially bizarre “outfit” would morph into. After the spiked tentacles fully inflated, the model quickly removed the tentacle cape and hit the runway in a purple jumpsuit with a silver metallic bodice.
The other pieces in the collection were no less fantastic.
In this video, Lady Gaga explains the mechanism behind Irving’s inflatable costumes. She wore one in 2014 during ArtRave: The Artpop Ball Tour. Gaga said her dress was made of Mylar, which is a polyester film made from stretched polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
It is used for its high tensile strength, chemical and dimensional stability, transparency, reflectivity, gas and aroma barrier properties and electrical insulation. She also said she wore “a ventilation system that pumped air into the spikes”, adding that she swelled the spikes when she got out of the car, so they came to life in pressing a button in front of the paparazzi to simply “scare” them.
