Meet the author
Friends of the Southport and Oak Island Library will host Nina de Gramont, author of the international and NY Times 2022 bestselling book, “The Christie Affair,” for a Q&A and book signing.
de Gramont lives on the North Carolina coast and teaches creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She is the author of acclaimed titles such as “Meet Me at the River”, “The Last September: A Novel” and “The Distance from Me to You”, which is filmed as a film adaptation.
A Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick, de Gramont’s “The Christie Affair” is a reimagining of one of the most discussed unsolved mysteries of the 20th century, the disappearance of author Agatha Christie in 1926.
The free event will take place from 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1 at the 801 Ocean Event Center, 801 Ocean Drive, Oak Island.
Registration is compulsory as places are limited. Call the Barbee Library at 910-278-4283 to reserve a spot.
Leland Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12196 to hold a coat drive to support the local community. All donations and contributions will go to Brunswick Family Assistance.
If possible, please have all coats cleaned before dropping them off. Also accepts donations of other children’s clothing such as socks, underwear and gloves. These items must be new.

Brunswick Civil War Roundtable
The Ironclad vs. Ironclad presentation will captivate audiences at the Civil War Roundtable meeting on Tuesday, November 1, with guest speaker Dwight Hughes.
Hughes is a public historian and author. He is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, served for 20 years as a naval warfare officer, and was a software engineer, primarily in electronic cartography for the US Geological Survey.
On March 8, 1862, the Confederate battleship CSS Virginia sailed to the Hampton Roads area of Virginia to engage the Union blockading wooden ships, only to be met by USS Monitor, the United States Navy battleship. Union.

world food day
The Brunswick Wellness Coalition is hosting its second annual #WorldFoodDay #givehealthy countywide healthy food drive through Friday, November 4. The goal is to promote countywide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and to address the need for healthy food for all. In the six townships of Brunswick County, there are eight pockets of poverty where 17% of the population is food insecure. To donate healthy food, please visit one of these drop off locations:

The Brunswick Wellness Coalition is a united group of health-conscious individuals and leaders whose mission is to improve the health of the Brunswick community and the vision of becoming the healthiest county in North Carolina.
VFW Calabash Post Auxiliary #7288 will hold its annual Chinese auction, which combines a silent auction with a raffle. Bidders buy tickets and use them to bid on items.
Auction items include many things that will make great gifts, tickets to special packages will also be available.
Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10, which will also include a door prize ticket.
Refreshments will be available for purchase, including homemade baked goods, snacks, hot dogs, burgers, fries, onion rings and shrimp platters.
Doors open at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 5 at 900 Carter Drive, Calabash.
All proceeds will be donated to the Military Services Program for Veterans of Foreign Wars (Unmet Needs and Military Assistance).

Southport Wooden Boat Show
The Southport Wooden Boat Show, which celebrates the maritime and boat building history of the Southport area, will host the 13th annual Wooden Boat Show beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 5 at the Old Yacht Basin in Southport.
The festivities will include wooden boats on display, boats on water on display, a wooden boat building demonstration, maritime exhibits, lectures, demonstrations, vendors, a raffle, prizes and children’s activities. Children’s activities will include Nauti-kids boat building, the NC Aquarium at the Fort Fisher booth (featuring live animals such as hermit crabs, starfish, anemones, snails and more marine animals that can be found in the waters off the North Carolina coast). Seashell activities and crafts will also be offered for all ages. NC Maritime Museum, Beaufort — Kids can climb into a flat-bottomed skiff with a sail and manipulate the lines as if they were sailing on it, weather permitting. Also, an opportunity for children to use traditional shipbuilding hand tools (drills, planes, scrapers, etc.).
There will also be Taste of the Cape Fear and harbor tours on the Cape Fear (boats depart from Fishy Fishy).
