It took seven years for Revival Cycles in Austin to bring The Revival Fuse to fruition and exhibit it at the company’s Handbuilt Motorcycle Show. The unique custom is a collaboration between Revival Cycles and a customer who has a resume of independent thinking in the company’s technology environment.Revival Cycles Revival Fuse: Custom Ducati“Revival offered the opportunity to not only build a concept bike,” says Ed Boyd, “but instead welcomed me into their design house to collaborate on a full 3D customization that used both high tech and low technology to achieve the ultimate goal of an unrivaled machine.” Boyd’s work history includes positions as Senior Vice President of Design for Dell, Vice President of Product Design for Dell, Global Category Creative Director for Nike, and Technology Designer for Sony. Unquestionably, Boyd is as unique a customer as The Revival Fuse. From Revival Cycles’ perspective, “What Boyd bought was an experience, not just a custom bike. Boyd claimed he knew any other store would have just taken his money and delivered a bike within a specified time. But Revival would work with him to deliver a unique, uncompromising experience bringing his design dreams to life. Boyd has collaborated with Revival Cycles for an unprecedented fully immersive design experience without boundaries or corporate agendas. This is a brutal change for a client fully integrated into the corporate world.

Revival Cycles is the dream of Alan Stulberg, whose motorcycle career began at age five. Rather than being handed a brand new car to his childhood home in Austin, Stulberg was presented with a non-operating Honda with instructions from his blue-collar rancher father to make it work if he wanted to drive it. Young Alan did just that. Stulberg studied applied arts and sciences at Texas Tech. After graduating, Stulberg entered the soul-killing corporate world, escaping in 2008 to found Revival Cycles. The company has a mission statement reflected in the motorcycles it builds: “We believe the motorcycle should be more than a means of transportation; it is an aesthetic expression that demonstrates the beauty of a useful form. We focus as much on design, art and architecture as on mechanics and engineering. When we mix our interests, the result is as much fun to ride as it is to see.Revival Cycles Revival Fuse: FairingThe Revival Fuse certainly meets those criteria. The build, dubbed the “$1/4 Million Experience Build,” draws inspiration from the more conventional Revival J63, with the aftermarket design and air-cooled Ducati engine as carryover themes. Performance takes a more central position on the 400-pound The Revival Fuse. The Ducati engine used in The Revival Fuse isn’t just an artistic statement. The 1100cc engine has high performance modifications including custom gear stacks, a race tuned ECU and a slipper clutch.The Revival Fuse from Revival Cycles: Ducati engineThe stainless steel exhaust is a marvel. The asymmetrical sweeping curves required 150 feet of weld bead to accomplish its production. The result is an engine that produces 140 horsepower, while maintaining reliability and a vintage look. Beyond the engine, virtually everything about The Revival Fuse is custom-made. Each part was sketched, translated to CAD, and then produced. The build represents over a thousand hours of custom build time. Stainless steel makes another appearance as the material used for the trellis frame. Above the frame is an incredibly graceful structure that extends from the tail to the steering head, covering the fuel tank and providing a base for the custom leather seat. A seven-coat paint job and a handmade aluminum fairing complete the design.The Revival Fuse by Revival Cycles: Handmade MotorcycleRevival Cycles is particularly proud of the manual controls. The builders claim The Revival Fuse has the “only known handlebar that is integrated into the upper triple clamp with integrated brake clutch and throttle controls, hidden cables and integrated hydraulic reservoirs and electrical gear”. motorcycle speed via an analog-style gauge with LCD accompaniment. Boyd will remember the bike’s name on every ride, as it’s scripted across the face. Rather than a wire connecting the ignition and the electrical system, RFID technology makes the connection wireless. Turn signals are integrated seamlessly into the rear section, although we don’t know where you’d mount a license plate, and we don’t see any provision for mirrors.Revival Cycles Revival Fuse: Stainless SteelTwin cantilever shocks are implemented and bolted to a CNC produced swingarm. The fork is also machined and Öhlins internals are installed. Braking comes courtesy of Hayes, who produced unique calipers for The Revival Fuse. Like many motorcycles, the calipers are polished. Dunlop created a set of unique 18-inch slicks for the rims, which are bonded to custom hubs.The Revival Fuse by Revival Cycles: Exotic Motorcycle ExhaustThe Revival Fuse is a spectacular build, worthy of its creators and the Handbuilt Motorcycle Show, which returned this year after a two-year government-mandated hiatus. Synchronized with the Grand Prix of the Americas at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, the Handbuilt Motorcycle Show attracts custom enthusiasts and expands its scope by attracting the most hardened motor racing enthusiasts.
