Built-in real-time control allows engineers to run BLDC motors in under 10 minutes while making motor systems quieter and up to 70% smaller
DALLAS, September 8, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Texas Instruments (TI) (Nasdaq: TXN) today introduced the industry’s first 70W brushless DC motor (BLDC) drivers to provide keystone and field-oriented (FOC) control without code, without sensor. The devices allow engineers to run a BLDC motor in less than 10 minutes, eliminating months of design time for engineers designing a wide variety of industrial systems such as large and small household appliances, and medical applications such as ventilators and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines. With integrated real-time control and up to 18 discrete components – including power semiconductor metal oxide field effect transistors (MOSFETs) – the devices also speed up system response time while reducing board space up to 70%, while delivering the best acoustic performance in class. “The need for real-time motor control is more critical than ever, thanks to far-reaching trends such as energy efficiency and automation, as well as the growing demand for quieter motors,” said Noman Akhtar, senior research analyst, Omdia. “An increasing number of industrial systems are moving from AC induction motors to BLDC motors, which are more energy efficient but require complex hardware and optimized software designs to deliver high performance. Meeting designers’ needs for faster engine response while shortening the overall design cycle will be an important step forward for next-generation industrial systems. “
Speed up design time with codeless, sensorless motor control
The BLDC MCF8316A and MCT8316A Motor Drivers include a unique set of switching control algorithms that eliminate the need to develop, maintain and qualify motor control software, eliminating months of design time. The algorithms, along with a high level of integration, allow these engine drivers to handle critical functions such as engine fault detection, while implementing protection mechanisms to increase system reliability. Because these motor drivers incorporate sensorless technology to determine rotor position, they eliminate the need for external Hall effect sensors, reducing system cost and increasing reliability.
Additionally, the MCF8316A Sensorless FOC Motor Driver intelligently extracts motor parameters, allowing designers to quickly tune an motor while delivering consistent system performance regardless of engine build variations. The MCT8316A Sensorless Keystone Motor Driver allows designers to tune a motor using just five hardware pins, simplifying systems by eliminating the need for a microcontroller interface.

First-class acoustic performance
The BLDC MCF8316A and MCT8316A motor drivers offer advanced real-time control capabilities to help engineers achieve peak acoustic performance in applications such as air purifiers, refrigerators, washing machines, and fans. The MCF8316A incorporates a patented and precise automatic dead time compensation technique that compensates for current distortion to allow engineers to optimize the acoustic performance of the motor. The MCT8316A includes variable keystone control techniques that designers can use to reduce engine noise.

System response speed with real-time monitoring
MCT8316A Sensorless Keystone Motor Driver can achieve maximum electric motor speed of 3.5kHz, which is faster than any other codeless and sensorless motor driver. This speeds up the system response in applications such as robotic vacuum cleaners that require fast and precise motor control.
The MCT8316A and MCF8316A are also the first in the industry to provide a fast, controlled way to actively decelerate an engine, allowing engineers to shut down an engine 50% faster than traditional engine control techniques. In addition, the devices can stop an engine without indiscriminately pumping energy into the rail, which protects the system from damage.
Reduce card space by up to 70%
The MCF8316A and MCT8316A can allow designers to reduce their board space by up to 70% and lower the total cost of the motor system. The devices incorporate three gate drivers and six high and low side MOSFETs with 50mΩ on resistance (RDS (activated)) each, making them the first BLDC motor drivers to allow up to 70W of power with 8A peak current for 12 and 24V systems. Motor drivers also incorporate components such as a regulator low voltage drop, DC / DC step-down regulator and current sense amplifiers, eliminating up to 18 discrete integrated circuits.
