Successful Test Shows Aerojet Rocketdyne Arkansas Site Ready to Produce Large Solid Rocket Engines

Aerojet Rocketdyne recently conducted a solid rocket motor test firing that demonstrated the successful transition of large solid rocket engine mixing, casting and testing operations from Sacramento, Calif., To its Camden site, in Arkansas.
“Aerojet Rocketdyne continues to advance its decades of work providing large, solid rocket engines, leveraging new facilities and innovative technologies and materials,” said Eileen P. Drake, CEO and President of Aerojet Rocketdyne. “Our Camden site is now ready to meet the country’s defense needs for large powder rocket engines. “
The engine was sunk at Camden’s engineering, manufacturing and development facility, which officially opened last October. Aerojet Rocketdyne has continued to build its capacity and team at its Camden site, increasing its workforce by over 70% over the past five years.
Measuring 52 inches in diameter and weighing approximately 7,800 pounds, the eSR-73 is designed as an upper stage that can serve as a second or third stage for a variety of large powder rocket engine applications. Aerojet Rocketdyne has been producing large dry rocket engines for critical defense and space programs for decades.
The eSR-73 demonstration engine test firing builds on work done by Aerojet Rocketdyne for the U.S. Air Force’s Research Laboratory on the Advanced Missile Component Technologies Demonstration Engine Program (MCAT Demo ). The MCAT demonstration engine was successfully tested last year at the Utah Test and Training Field.
Both tests demonstrated advanced graphite composite housings, affordable advanced nozzles, and high energy, long-life solid propellant. The eSR-73 is a further step towards production readiness and served as a scout for the production and management of large solid rocket engines at the Aerojet Rocketdyne site in Camden.
