Spooky Story entries expected on Thursday

To help readers get in the spirit of the Halloween season, Driftless Multimedia and its sponsors are once again hosting a writing contest, “Spooky Stories to Tell in the Driftless.” Submit submissions telling your best scary story in one of four “categories”: adult fiction or non-fiction, and youth fiction or non-fiction (up to 17 years old).
Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in each category: $100 for the first adult, $50 for the second adult and $25 for the third adult. Youth prizes will be $50, $30 and $15 respectively.
Stories will be judged by “spooktacular” community judges and entries will be published in the Driftless Journal. Share your original fictional haunted stories or simply write down any ghostly experiences you may have had personally as non-fiction.

Fictional ghost stories are terrifying to read; the writer can write a bizarre story of events that could not possibly happen. Ghost stories are welcome, of course, but submissions can
involve any paranormal or supernatural theme. What we’re looking for is creative writing, new perspectives, and maybe a few surprises. Submissions will be judged on originality, plot structure, quality of writing, and the “wow” factor.

Nothing really gives readers chills more than reading about a ghostly non-fiction encounter. These events actually happened. Stories entered into this category must be based on true, unexplained events experienced by someone in the Driftless region, whether personally experienced or passed down through Driftless lore. Names and dates may be changed for privacy reasons. Submissions will be judged on plot structure, quality of writing, connection to Driftless, and the “wow” factor.

Submissions should not exceed 500 words. The deadline for submission is Thursday, September 29. Winners in each category will be announced in October.
Submissions should include the author‘s name, hometown, entry category, and contact information. Email submissions to: [email protected] by 5 p.m. Thursday, September 29. There is no registration fee to participate.
Please keep in mind that the Driftless Journal is a family publication.

Limit one story per author. Individual entries only; group submissions will not be accepted. The story must be your own work: either an original play or the retelling (in your own words) of an unexplained ghost/mystery story you have heard or experienced. By submitting your story, you give Driftless Multimedia LLC and its partners non-exclusive permission to use content by and/or made by the entrant for digital or print publications. You understand that this may include, but is not limited to, social media posts, websites, newspapers, advertisements, and audio recordings. You certify that no authorization from another person is necessary to authorize the use of said content or images. You agree that Driftless Multimedia LLC cannot be held responsible for images or content used with your consent.
