UNITED STATES – Maintaining that delicate balance of enigmatic, arty, alternative popularity and success, Twenty One Pilots’ highly anticipated ‘Icy’ tour hit the road this summer, giving lighting designer Tyler ‘Shap’ Shapard the chance to produce a Sleek and imaginative lighting design based on atmospheric ambience and vibration engineering – with many dramatic differences – for each song.

A cornerstone of this design was 80 Robe MegaPointes, explained Shap, who collaborated closely on this tour with co-designer and programmer Dayne DeHaven. Their creative process involved Shap producing the essential looks and building blocks for each issue and Dayne completing the nuts + bolts lineup they tweaked together. Shap was also on the road to provide day-to-day lighting.

The MegaPointes are a favorite Shap device and they have featured on the last two Twenty One Pilots tour cycles, which included the immediate aftermath Covid “Takeover” tour earlier in 2022, where the band played four venues of varying sizes in six key cities, followed by an international summer festival tour.

Everyone loved the Arena version of the “Takeover” rig so much that it became the starting point for the “Icy” tour, modified, redesigned and with additional lights.

Shap loves the sheer speed and power of the MegaPointes: “It totally bridges that gap between being intense enough for a work light and fast enough for an effect light,” he noted, adding that it’s about of a “completely unique” fixture, and nothing comes close to it in terms of “just being able to do the same”, which is every LD’s dream!

The MegaPointes were dotted across the five up/down facing touring truss “fingers” which gave the entire scene an aura of architectural elegance and were joined by 21 Robe BMFL WashBeams used for the key lighting, which Shap is equally enthusiastic about.

“BMFL WashBeam is an epic great wash light! The framing shutters are fantastic, and when hung from a beam downstream with the zoom extended, they bring incredible depth to the image. The intensity drop is very limited along the BMFL zoom and it blends very naturally, producing that unique even wash across the entire scene.

This is “by far” Shap’s best lattice wash light. For the ‘Icy’ tour, he consistently used the BMFL WashBeams in this context, as well as for the specials, reiterating the usefulness of this ‘deep zoom’ effect as a creative treatment, really making the artists ‘pop’ on stage.

Eight BMFL FollowSpots with integrated cameras were another essential part of this light show.

They’re “amazing,” says Shap. He thinks RoboSpot is even more so because different quantities and types of Robe fixtures can be hooked up to a RoboSpot and controlled remotely, so he can have chases anywhere on the rig covering all angles.

For “Icy,” the RoboSpots directed luminaries positioned in three different areas: backstage right and left and up front, keeping the focus on lead singer Tyler Joseph from three different angles. Six of the BMFL FollowSpots were on the two downstream beams and two more at the end of the most upstream beam.

Shap also drafted 36 Spikies into the floor package, chosen for their tiny size, brightness, and 360 degree rotation.

Twenty were deployed along the top of the low onstage video wall, and the rest dotted around the two “cry decks” interspersed with a battery of cryo jets and confetti cannons. “A great little light with a lot of punch, good zoom, prism, flower effect, fabulous and super-fast color mixing, all in a very compact unit,” he commented.

Shap admits to being generally “picky” about luminaries, and all of these Robe luminaries made different but meaningful impressions of him and his designs.

The design of the “Icy” arena show was also based on being able to quickly and painlessly clone luminaries for the international festival section of the tour where they headlined many European festivals, including the main stage of the Friday night at Colors of Ostrava in the Czech Republic.

The up and down facing trusses and two-story stage design offered plenty of three-dimensionality, especially when juxtaposed with the LED screens that were also part of Shap’s overall stage design.

The bespoke video content for the show was created by Chris Schoenman, and the live camera/IMAG director was Adam Peck.

Shap has worked with Twenty One Pilots for almost ten years and relishes the challenges of working with an artist like Tyler Joseph who has tremendous vision and perspective on how live shows and his music should be presented. He is also extremely tech-savvy. “He knows BMFLs, MegaPointes, Spikies, etc., the differences between them and their potential for use on the show,” Shap says, “Above all, he knows what he wants.”

He also respects his team’s expertise, knowledge and creativity, so Shap also has plenty of leeway to evolve a design and bring different elements to the table for each project.

The “Icy” tour gave Shap the opportunity to add a lot of pyro and other SFX to the show: smoke, flames, confetti, cryo jets, snow cannons, industrial bubble machines and sonic booms, which was “very funny”. says with a big smile, in addition to using her favorite Robe moving lights, all of which helped transform the show and enhance the visuals.

Some very cool combo lighting and SFX cues involving bubbles and gobos etc, especially during seminal numbers like “Chlorine” and “Heathens”, all help to change the mood, giving each song its unique aura, its narrative and emotional connection with the audience.

In terms of creative work: “This show will be hard to put down,” admits Shap, but he is already looking forward to future projects and working with Robe FORTES and some of the other new and exciting LED technologies that have arrived. on the market in the last year.

Production manager Rodney Johnson kept things running smoothly on the “Icy” route. Lighting, video and rigging were provided by Solotech, audio by Clair, SFX by Image SFX and automation/staging by SGPS.
