Rhino completes full scale testing of hydrogen explosion proof panels.

Rhino HySafe has successfully completed full-scale testing of its ultra-fast blast panels, as part of its inaugural UFER project.

The company, which is a specialist subsidiary of Rhino Engineering Group, carried out the physical tests at RAF Spadeadam in Cumbria, following recent design and simulation tests.

The panels were created to provide hydrogen fueling stations and other sites with state-of-the-art technology designed to reduce the risks associated with explosions.

Full-scale tests demonstrated rapid panel opening, well before the arrival of the flame front, and rapid transition to a fully open configuration, allowing unhindered exit of the flame front and combustion products.

After completion of the tests, complete retention of the panel elements was demonstrated, justifying the design of the structural cassette and the associated fixings.

As shown in the graph below, the performance envelope demonstrated overlaps the static, impulsive, and dynamic range, illustrating the value of Pstatistical at 20 mbarg (0.3 psig) and minimum opening pulse of 325 mbarg ms (4.7 psi ms).

These properties, associated with a specific mass of the panel 2provide fast, low inertia response after the panel is opened.

This iso-aperture curve gives a quick overview of the performance of the UFER panel, regardless of the explosion loading conditions of concern to the designer.

Following these successful explosion tests, Rhino intends to commercialize the UFER panels by March 2023, providing the global hydrogen market with innovative products for the protection of people and property.
