The campus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST(GZ)) opened its doors to students and faculty earlier this month. The iconic campus marries nature and technology in the local urban context, aiming for carbon neutrality and zero water waste.
Working closely with KPF Architects, Arup’s offices in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Chongqing jointly provided comprehensive engineering design services to deliver this smart, sustainable and resilient campus. Our range of services covered civil, geotechnical, structural, building services, facade, smart building technology system and sustainable design.
Located in Guangzhou’s Nansha District and next to Qingsheng High-Speed Railway Station, the new campus includes a full range of academic facilities – teaching and research spaces, sports, dormitories, 24-hour library as well as energy and data centers – spanning over 1.1 km².
Arup contributed to the design of a campus ready to be made available for carbon neutrality during its operations. Key outdoor collaboration areas and buildings incorporate energy efficient MEP systems and passive and active sustainability design features that maximize comfort and interaction while minimizing life cycle cost.
