Mid-Century Washington Waterfront Home for $1.25 Million

Sellers of a rare mid-century two-story home just blocks from the waterfront in Burien, Wash., are asking for $1.25 million.

Less than a year ago, this four-bedroom, four-bathroom property — located at 11660 23rd Ave. SW, about five minutes from the Burien waterfront – was half its asking price. However, the house we see today is an impressive transformed version of the previous one.

Here is the property in the summer of 2021, when sellers bought the property for $725,000.

The house, built in 1955, has been modernized. Its owners sought to give it a 2022 vibe without betraying the vision of its original designer, SD Vanek.

Listing agent Deirdre Doyle told the Seattle PI that working with the sellers – Axel Iverson and Anya Gericke, a design and landscaping team responsible for the painstaking upgrading of the property – was “a dream”.

“They really understand how to be respectful to a property when they have the chance to handle the restoration,” Doyle said. “Anya is an amazing landscaper. Her watchful eye allows the gardens to be the backdrop and the house to become center stage. Axel has a touch of restraint when working the bones of a house [that] helps tell the original story of the visionary.

Vanek, the original builder, was a Washington-based architect and structural engineer. His ideas resulted in the creation of a house ahead of its time.

“SD Vanek was primarily a naval architect and marine engineer, and was the engineering and sales manager for the Bellingham Shipyards Company, and had previously worked for the Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Company,” Iverson said. “He also had a mechanical engineering degree from UW, which explains the huge ‘U’ and ‘W’ fireplace log racks that are still in use.”

The couple kept a time capsule of historical documents, including a scan of a receipt for Vanek’s purchase of materials used to build a heated concrete floor in the basement.

The property is about a five-minute drive from the Burien Waterfront and Salmon Creek Ravine Park.

There’s also a copy of the proposed construction payment schedule that Vanek submitted to apply for his Federal Housing Administration loan. The amount he needed in the mid-1900s to create this house was only $18,000.
