Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering Ltd (MHIENG), a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) group company, has agreed to license its carbon capture technology and provide the Process Design Package (PDP) for the planned Phase 1 of the first capture, use and storage (CCUS) project under development by Eni SpA

Phase 1 of the project aims to capture approximately 25,000 tpy of CO2 from the exhaust gases of the turbocharger operating in Eni’s natural gas plant located in Casalborsetti (Ravenna), in northeastern Italy.

MHIENG’s role in the project will be to provide licenses for its carbon capture technology, the KM CDR processMTjointly developed with The Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc., which is a technology that captures CO2 contained in the flue gases through a chemical absorption process using MHIENG’s proprietary KS-1MT solvent. This system has already been deployed in 13 commercial installations around the world, where its high reliability has been confirmed by a solid track record. MHIENG will provide its carbon capture technology through NextChem SpA, a dedicated green chemistry subsidiary of Marie Tecnimont Group, a leading Italian engineering company engaged in the transformation of natural resources as well as the industrialization of technologies to support the energetic transition.

The new agreement marks MHIENG’s first supply of its carbon capture technology to Italy and is extremely important in terms of strengthening its presence in Europe. It will also serve as a springboard for the MHI Group as a whole, with MHIENG continuing to work in alliance with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries EMEA Ltd. (MHI-EMEA) – MHI’s regional headquarters for Europe, the Middle East and Africa – to meet demand. in Italy and across Europe to advance the energy transition and achieve a carbon neutral society.

The MHI Group is currently strengthening its position in the energy transition, and is developing a CO sector2 The ecosystem is a central element of this initiative. CCUS is attracting attention as an effective way to achieve a carbon neutral society.
