CAMDEN – Barbara Kent Lawrence, author of eight books including ‘Islands of Time’ and ‘The Other Island: Ben’s Story’, has a new manuscript and wants to know what the public thinks about it. “Both Sides of the Pond: My Family’s War” is based on extensive research, but written like a novel. Now the Camden Public Library has copies of the manuscript available to read and a questionnaire that readers can complete anonymously to “let them know” what you think.

“Both Sides of the Pond: My Family’s War” tells the story of Lawrence’s own family during World War II, in Britain and the United States. Just before the war, his mother, British film star Barbara Green (stage name), led a booming life – regularly thrown alongside the biggest names of the day, dating Joe Kennedy, Jr. and earning eventually the approval of his socially ambitious mother. When war interrupted that life, she spent her 20s playing more roles than she could have imagined.

Barbara’s brother, R. Kent Green, joined the British Expeditionary Forces immediately after Britain declared war in 1939, survived Dunkirk in 1940, and served with the 1st and 6th Airborne Divisions in several theatres.

Their divergent stories are unique yet universal. “Both Sides of the Pond: My Family’s War” interweaves family legend and historical facts and offers a fresh perspective on the challenges of war on the home front and on the battlefield. Their experiences deepen our understanding of the conflicts and tensions created by war, and the possibilities of ordinary people for extraordinary love, growth and courage. So tell Lawrence what you think. She can be called at 207-992-3039 or by email at [email protected].
