Kershaw named Hutchins Professor of Civil Engineering

Associate Professor Kyle Kershaw, PhD, will integrate the concepts of resilient infrastructure and design for climate change into undergraduate courses as a new endowed Dr. Roland E. Hutchins Chair in Civil Engineering. The three-year appointment begins September 1.

The Hutchins Chair recognizes the institute’s best and brightest faculty members who are committed to excellence and innovation in their fields and in their educational endeavours, according to Ella Ingram, associate dean for professional development who coordinates the endowed chair program. Faculty receive annual stipends and summer salaries to continue to excel in their areas of specialization, lead conversations with other educators in their fields, and create opportunities for students and their peers.

According to a 2021 policy statement from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), resilience is the ability to plan for, prepare for, mitigate and adapt to changing hazard conditions to enable rapid recovery of infrastructure. physical, social, economic and ecological. Resilience is one of the priority areas of recently passed federal infrastructure legislation in the areas of buildings, transportation, water and energy.

“It’s increasingly important that our infrastructure is resilient,” Kershaw said. “Giving our students the tools to design and assess resilient infrastructure has become even more important due to the government’s focus on infrastructure revitalization.

Kershaw will draw on international collaboration with colleagues at the University of Bath in the UK and its geotechnical consultancy experience with industry partners.

Additionally, Kershaw plans to expand its knowledge of resilient infrastructure design and assessment principles to become a technical resource within Rose-Hulman. He hopes to develop resilient infrastructure course materials to facilitate student learning, provide opportunities for undergraduate research and design projects, and build relationships with academic institutions and industry representatives who share a common interest in resilient infrastructure.

Kershaw’s areas of expertise are foundation design, earth retention, slope stabilization and geohazard analysis. He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Colorado with several years of full-time experience as a geotechnical consultant. Kershaw teaches courses in soil mechanics, foundation design, support structure design, and building materials, and is active in applied geotechnical research, educational research, and geotechnical consulting.

Along with Associate Professor Matt Lovell, PhD, of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Kershaw brought a modular learning lab to campus, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. This lab has become a valuable teaching tool for courses in structural analysis, steel and concrete structure design, and foundation design through large-scale and near-scale structural testing.

Kershaw is a co-advisor for the campus chapter of Engineers Without Borders and previously advised the Cecil T. Lobo de Rose-Hulman student chapter of ASCE.

Kershaw earned a bachelor’s and doctoral degree from Missouri of Science and Technology and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois.

The Dr. Roland E. Hutchins Endowed Chair honors the legacy of an esteemed teacher who served 32 years in the Department of Civil Engineering at Rose-Hulman.
