How to take care of your emotional well-being


SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) – October is Emotional Wellness Month, and depending on your constant daily demands, your emotional health can be negatively affected.

This month is a great time to focus on and identify your biggest stressors. To help you out, our health expert Karen Owoc is here with some daily self-care tips that can help you cope and calm down.

Stress weakens the immune system

Stress can affect the immune system. When you are stressed, the stress hormone cortisol is released, which can suppress your body’s ability to fight off foreign invaders. This is why those who experience chronic stress tend to get sick more often.

Give yourself time to free yourself from the overwhelming stress that drastically affects your daily life and your longevity.

Self-care activities

  1. Review your financial plan.

• Money problems can be stressful. By creating a plan that matches your savings, income, and personal goals, you will help relieve anxiety.

• Adjust your spending habits, if necessary, to plan for the future.

• Plan a vacation that fits your financial plan to improve your emotional well-being.

  1. Learn something new

If you used to spend 3 hours a day getting to and from work, working from home, you can have up to 15 extra hours that can be spent taking care of yourself.

• Watch a bunch of TEDx conferences.

• TEDx Talks cannot last longer than 18 minutes. According to the TEDx organization, 18 minutes is long enough to be taken seriously, but short enough to hold your attention.

• A motivating 3-minute TEDx talk: “Try Something New for 30 Days” presented by Matt Cutts.

• Take online courses. For example, the Skillshare and Masterclass online learning communities which offer “real life” courses – from business, photography, music, design, creative writing to entrepreneurship.

  1. Start a gratitude journal

• Gratitude is a learned skill. It’s a perfect antidote when you’re feeling stressed. When you’re stressed, it’s hard to focus on anything else.

• A gratitude journal has been shown to change your perspective. It can improve your relationships, your life, and your health.

• Write down the things you are grateful for – things like the little niceties you may have received that day to your health.

  1. Cooking and baking

• Healthy cooking is a form of personal care. Experiment in the kitchen. Be in the moment.

• Learn basic knife skills and cooking skills at your own pace.

• There are online cooking schools, YouTube and thousands of cooking blogs on the Internet for learning these skills.

• Cook / bake with your children while they are at home. Children learn by cooking. They learn:

• Reading – build new vocabulary and follow step by step instructions

• Science – biology (how plants grow) and chemistry (how cooking works)

• Mathematics – measure, numbers, count, shapes, patterns, proportions

• Motor skills – stirring, cutting, pouring, etc.

• Creates bonding time.

• Creates family memories that your children will cherish forever.

• Develop healthy habits while they are young and impressionable.

• Teaches a life skill.

• Produces fewer picky eaters. Children usually eat what they have helped plan and prepare.

  1. Declutter and reorganize your home

• What better time to do something than there has never been the time to do before. Since you spend more time in your home (and a lot with multiple family members, decluttering will give you more space.

• Letting go of old, unused clothes, household items and toys can be very liberating and force you to decide what is really important to you.

• During this time, a lot of cleaning is essential. Decluttering your home will make it easier to clean.

• Redesigning your home can help you see your world from a different perspective, which can always spark a little creativity and positivity.

  1. Watch something fun!

• Disable information. Watch shows or movies that make you laugh, hypnotize you, or transport you to another time and place instead of bombarding you with negativity.

• Watch your favorite shows or movies from your childhood as they can be a way to calm down, relax and feel grounded when life is hectic.

• Watch sitcoms or comedy shows. Laughter releases endorphins (natural pain relievers that trigger positive feelings) which can reduce stress, depression, negative thoughts, and feelings of isolation.

Takeaway meals: Fall is the season for change. It’s the perfect time of year to do things you didn’t have time for before.
