GOT Writer Discusses House of the Dragon Competing With LOTR: The Rings of Power

Game of Thrones author George RR Martin addresses the perceived competition between House of the Dragon and Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

A song of ice and fire author George RR Martin commented on the perceived rivalry emerging between the next The iron Throne prequel Dragon House and that of Amazon The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Martin said he hoped both shows would find success (but was still rooting for his own) while speaking to The Independent at the Santa Fe Literary Festival. “I’m pretty competitive. I hope we do more,” he said. “If they win six Emmys, and I hope they do, I hope we win seven.” Martin mentioned the so-called “battle for fantasy supremacy” being built around the two franchises. However, the author explained that as a fan of fantasy himself, he would be happier to see the genre succeed as a whole.

Martin said that the premiere dates of the two shows are what he believes is the source of the rivalry. Dragon House will debut on August 21 via HBO Max, while power rings will premiere September 2 on Prime Video. The author expressed his exasperation with the nature of the contest, but insisted he would still love to win.

Martin commented on Amazon’s acquisition of the Lord of the Rings as well. “It’s a bit of a weird deal, as you know. Amazon bought Tolkien, but they didn’t actually get any of the books,” the author said. “They did not have the Lord of the Ringsthey did not get The Hobbitthey didn’t even have The Silmarillion. I don’t think they have Farmer Gilles de Ham or Sheet by Nigglebut they got the appendices.” Martin mentioned that he was always excited to see what Amazon would come up with, explaining that there was a lot of interesting mythology in the appendices, which could be used for stories.

Dragon House is an upcoming HBO production based on Martin’s book Fire & Blood. The book is a history of the fictional Targaryen dynasty that ruled Westeros before the events of The iron Throne. Dragon House will tell the story of a succession crisis between the Targaryens, which culminated in a civil war known as the “Dance of the Dragons”. The new show is set hundreds of years before the events of the main series and stars Matt Smith and Emma d’Arcy as Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen, respectively.

power rings will also be a prequel to the series from which it originated. The show promises to cover major events of the Second Age of Middle-earth, such as the Forging of the One Ring and the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron. A few characters will be included who were seen in the the Lord of the Rings movies. Elrond is played by Robert Aramayo, an actor who previously had a role in The iron Throne as a young Eddard Stark. Still, for now, most comparisons will have to wait until both shows are available to the public.

Dragon House will be available to stream on HBO Max on August 21. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power follows suit on Prime Video on September 2.
