Google is launching its first Product Development Center in Africa and there are eight vacancies for people looking to be among those transforming Africa’s digital footprint. The big tech company is looking for people who have creativity and a knack for problem solving.
The development center is based in Nairobi, Kenya, with the majority of vacancies being in the East African capital; with two vacancies in South Africa and Nigeria.
Prospective candidates should be well-versed in solving technical issues related to the smartphone experience for people in Africa and in building a reliable network infrastructure.
Google hopes the center will become the space where creative solutions are developed that drive growth in the future. The initiative aims to develop products and services that will be used in Africa and around the world.
In 2020, Google for Africa received an investment of $1 billion (R14.9 billion). According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the investment is a “continuation” of the company’s promise to drive Africa’s digital transformation.
“Africa’s potential to become a leading digital economy is looming on the horizon and Google is committed to accelerating Africa’s digital transformation through human capital and enabling ‘African solutions to African problems’ and global “through better products,” said Nitin Gajria, Google in Africa MD.
The money that will be invested over five years is also intended to create faster and more affordable access to the Internet; entrepreneurial assistance to small businesses and not-for-profits, and product development.
Here are the positions offered:
Developer Relations Engineer, Android

In addition to having a bachelor’s degree in computer science or any other equivalent experience. Google is looking for someone who is a talkative type but with a go-getter attitude. So if you’re a network type person and like public forums, this might be for you. As a developer at Google, you will need to network and communicate with other developers, as well as advance the interests of the company. It’s not just numbers and coding walls, but you’ll need to have extensive experience dealing with Android and developers.
You can expect to troubleshoot and debug coding issues encountered by others. You will work closely with the internal team to develop ways to improve products, review and test new designs and features. If you’re familiar with creating content, you’ll have the upper hand, developers will need to create podcasts, videos, and more.
You will promote platforms such as Chrome, App Engine, Ads APIs and other core Google applications. Knowing your domain well is mandatory because you will be the face of the developers. They therefore need a coherent candidate who can lead the change and express all the interests of the internal team.
Senior Developer Relations Engineer, Android
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Lead Developers do not differ from the General Developer Relations Engineer outside of their responsibilities. As a manager, you will manage the developers making sure to represent their interests. You build and manage relationships between engineers and work with Google App and Android teams. Producing sample code, APIs, tools, and code labs are just some of the responsibilities you would take on.
Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent practical experience, including experience managing an organization’s planning cycle and working across multiple departments. Experience in development relations and speaking in public forums is an asset.
Senior User Experience Researcher, Android and UX Designer, Android
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
User experience focuses on the user and nothing more. The Senior User Experience Researcher and UX Designer report to the UX team. The goal is for the team to research and collect user experience data and insights and create bespoke products for customers that match customer needs, attitudes and behaviors. As a Senior User Experience Researcher, you will help a team of UX designers and engineers to develop creative and innovative products. If research is your thing, this job requires you to conduct research and interviews to ensure you stay on top of consumer behavior.
As a Principal Researcher, you will work alongside stakeholders, with various other Google departments, as well as work and learn from UX designers across the company in meetings, programs, and research tools. Google prefers applicants with a Master’s or PhD in the relevant field, but don’t worry if you don’t meet this requirement, if you have a Bachelor’s degree in the relevant disciplines, you can still apply. Research and knowledge experience in Sub-Saharan Africa and familiarity with relevant research tools and methods is preferred.
UX designer, Android
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
As a UX designer, you’ll work hand-in-hand with product managers and engineers to study consumer behavior. Researching and conducting interviews should be your thing. As an Interaction Designer, you will solve solutions and create products from scratch that are tailored to consumer behavior.
A UX designer will build Android and Google Play alongside teams from YouTube, Search, Assistant and Payments. Simultaneously, help other teams grow as well, such as platform and ecosystem engineering, product, and design.

Business Development Manager, Android
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
This job requires you to be able to write and speak Amharic and English fluently. This job will require you to travel to East Africa and Ethiopia to manage working relationships with various stakeholders, from Android to Mobile Network Operators, Retail Partners, etc. You will be responsible for establishing and maintaining these partner relationships. You must have a minimum experience in market development or business development. If you have qualifications in understanding legal documents, relationship management is a plus.
Product Manager, Android and Play
As a Product Manager, you will work closely with projects from its nascent phases and oversee it through launch. You will serve as the body that aligns technology with the business world. You will be responsible for providing plans to accelerate product development as the company grows. As a Manager, you will resolve user issues, from affordability to connectivity reliability, ensuring users get the best experience with Android and Google Apps. If you have an eye for detail, this job may be for you – you’ll oversee product promotion, packaging and analysis.
Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree, but preferably candidates with experience in management, shipping, wireless technologies and the ability to work in a team.
Developer Ecosystem Communities Manager
Location: Lagos, Nigeria; Nairobi, Kenya; Johannesburg, South Africa

This position will require individuals to work with outreach and support programs such as Google Developer Groups (GDG), Google Developer Student Clubs (GDSC) and Women Techmakers (WTM) programs, across Sub-Saharan Africa . You would be responsible for content creation and Google events.
You will need to work with developers and apps in your region as well as tech hubs. A degree is not required for this position, but you will need to provide evidence of experience in facilitating community projects or initiatives as well as program/project management. Being able to speak French fluently is a plus, including speaking in public or representing an organization to the public.
Product, Platform and Ecosystem Marketing Manager
Location: Johannesburg, South Africa; Nairobi, Kenya; Lagos, Nigeria
Applicants may indicate in their application which location they would prefer for this position. As a Marketing Manager, you will immerse yourself in all aspects of marketing, not just the products or the business. You will work closely with the commercial, communication and legal departments. You will be involved from start to finish in the marketing strategy for a particular product. You will execute campaigns, also work with external agencies.
Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree and have at least marketing or sales experience. Preferred qualifications are experience in implementing marketing frameworks, creative and leadership skills, and managing and driving a marketing campaign.
