[FIRST LOOK] Sanaa Lathan directs the movie Come Up


Emmy-nominated actress and New York Times best-selling novelist Sanaa Lathan makes her feature directorial debut with On The Come Up. The film is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month. It will premiere on Paramount+ on September 23.

The upcoming Paramount+ movie, On The Come Up, released its official trailer and key art on Sunday. The full trailer premiered during the MTV VMA broadcast.

The film is based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Angie Thomas. Angie has turned her love for writing into a literary career. She also wrote the bestselling book-turned-movie, ‘The hate you give‘ and holds a BFA in creative writing from Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi.

On the way up movie synopsis

movie stars Jamila C. Gray, a newcomer to the cinema, and follows the journey of her character. A gifted 16-year-old rapper named Bri. Bri tries to storm the rap scene in order to raise her family and make right for her dead father. However, when her first hit song goes viral for the wrong reasons, she is hit two ways. Bri must decide; Is she sticking to the authenticity that has gotten her where she is thus far or is she accepting the fake persona that the industry is about to impose on her. Sanaa Lathan stars in the film as her mother and Method Man as her father.

The coming-of-age film also stars Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Mike Epps, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Lil Yachty, Justin Martin, Titus Makin, Michael Cooper Jr. and many more.

On the way up is the first film directed by Sanaa Lathan; who is the next black actress to make the jump from the big screen to the director seat. Regina King recently directed making her directorial debut with a hit film, One night in Miamiin 2020.
