A Hackney-born actress and writer is raising funds to turn her “East London Love Letter” into a television series.

Dorcas A Stevens was born in Hackney and honed her storytelling in acting troupes and training in the Dalston area.

His television script For The Culture tells the story of three friends from east London.

Dorcas began writing at a young age and playing theater, then studied theater and creative writing at university.

Dorcas told the Gazette: “It was then that I understood that I wanted to write my own work in terms of plays and scripts.

She started writing Pour la culture in 2019.

Actor and screenwriter Kayode Ewumi, the creator of BAFTA-winning Hood Documentary, helped Dorcas pitch the screenplay to a production company.

But the Covid pandemic has “shut down” the entertainment industry, delaying the development of films and TV shows in the UK and around the world.

“Nobody was doing anything new,” Dorcas said.

“People were struggling to do the work they had started before the pandemic.

“So there was a lot of delay and things calmed down for the production companies who were interested.”

But the actress and screenwriter persevered and shot a teaser for the series that needs funding.

Dorcas plays one of the main characters Ajua Green.

It also revolves around Ajua’s two best friends.

“These three main characters are trying to figure out what it means to be themselves, what it means to be a woman and what it means to be human in today’s culture – it’s really an ever-changing target, ”Dorcas added.

She describes the script as her “love letter to east London”.

Locations where the teaser was shot include Stoke Newington, Hackney Downs, and Breakhouse Café in Hackney Wick.

“I was really excited when we could shoot in East London, like New York is for Sex and the City of East London for For The Culture – he’s a different character sort of. “
