Details on the family life of the author “Maid”

Prepare to learn more about Housemaid, given that the new Netflix series wows critics. The 10-episode series centers on a single mother who escapes abuse and walks through poverty to provide a better life for herself and her young daughter.

Housemaid is named after and inspired by the 2019 memoir of Stephanie Land, Housekeeper: hard work, low wages and a mother’s will to survive, but this is not an exact account of Stephanie’s life. The central character of the series, played by Margaret Qualley, is called Alex, for example, and showrunner Molly Smith Metzler said Decision maker recently that the series is “emotionally very loyal to memories”.

So, given that the series is partly fictional, here’s more information on Stephanie’s true story so far.

Stephanie Land’s mother’s experience informed her motherhood journey.

As Stephanie details in her book, her dreams of becoming a writer during college days were postponed when she had an unplanned pregnancy with an abusive partner. She left that partner and became a single mother, working low-paying jobs and living in a homeless shelter.

Stephanie explained on NPR Fresh air in 2019 that she knew she wanted to continue the pregnancy. “One story about it was that my mom told me she was about to have an abortion,” she said. “She said she sat in the parking lot and just couldn’t go on. And she told me that when I was 13, and it really affected me. It made me feel a little less wanted. So I can honestly say that I always wanted Mia. I just wasn’t sure this was the best situation for her.

Stéphanie also relied on her father’s advice. “I remember one conversation in particular with my father, who was 20 when I was born,” she said. “He said, ‘You know, your mom and I were kinda in the same situation, but, you know, everything went well; and you are well and your brother is well; and everything went well at the end. So I kind of started with that attitude. Like, okay that might be really hard, but it’ll be okay in the end. “
