Jodi Kantor, whose work as a journalist and author was key to the start of the #MeToo movement highlighting the long litany of sexual abuse by the powerful in American business and politics, will be the guest speaker at the first Fall Semester 2021 University Forum at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM). Her presentation, “Breaking The Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Unite a Movement” will take place online Tuesday, September 14 at 6:30 p.m. and will be available live via Zoom Webinar, with a link available at https: //www.usm .edu / honors /forum-schedule.php.

Kantor is a bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize winner New York Times investigative journalist whose work reveals “hidden truths” about gender, power, economics and politics in America. In 2017, Kantor and fellow journalist Megan Twohey revealed the story of allegations of sexual abuse dating back to the 1970s against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, inspiring the #MeToo movement and, along with a team of journalists from The New York Times, earned Kantor the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service, journalism’s highest honor.

“Jodi Kantor has helped change our view of gender and power. Before the #MeToo movement began, many Americans, at least those who had not been victims of sexual predators, viewed sexual misconduct as isolated instances of bad behavior, ”said Dr. Andrew Haley, Director of University Forum. “After Kantor and Megan Twohey reports on Harvey Weinstein, this is no longer possible. Weinstein’s story demonstrated that sexual harassment was and still is part of a persistent culture of discrimination against women. University Forum is excited to bring Kantor virtually to southern Mississippi. ”

In 2019, Kantor and Twohey recounted their race to expose Weinstein in She said: Breaking the story of sexual harassment that helped spark a movement. A film based on this book is currently in preparation. In addition to her reporting on sexual harassment and abuse, Kantor is well known for writing about the personal and professional life of President Barack Obama in his 2012 book. The Obamas.
