Pelham Grenville Wodehouse ̶ nicknamed “Plum” by his family ̶ was born in England on October 15, 1881 and began writing at an early age. Her first novel, The pot hunterswas published in 1902.
He went on to produce over 90 books, in addition to countless articles. song lyrics and scene and scripts. His indelible characters include Bertie Wooster and Jeeves (played by Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry in the PBS series Jeeves and Wooster), as well as Lord Emsworth and his precious pig, Empress of Blandings.
Wodehouse moved to the United States in 1947, settling in Remsenburg, New York, and was still writing when he died in 1975, weeks after being knighted by Queen Elizabeth. He is famous for his elaborate plots and elegant puns, and has described his writing as “a kind of musical without music”.
In 2019, he posthumously received the ultimate honor for an English writer: a memorial stone near Poets’ Corner at Westminster Abbey.
Founded in 1980 by a small group of devoted admirers of Wodehouse and his works, the Wodehouse Society has grown to include members from all over the world, including the UK, Europe, India and from Japan. In the United States and Canada, there are 20 regional chapters whose members meet regularly between conventions.
The society’s first convention was held in 1982 in Pennsylvania; subsequent gatherings moved across the country every two years, and all featured a delightful mix of talk, song, play and fellowship. The company also publishes a quarterly journal titled Plum Lines.
The 2022 convention, titled “Where in the World Is Pelham?” San Diego! is 21st the Wodehouse Society’s international convention, and the first to be held in California since 2005’s “Hooray for Hollywood!” gathering.
With plenty of merriment and plenty of engaging discussion on the agenda, this convention promises to be as fun and informative as any TWS binge. A highlight will be a musical performance of Wodehouse songs by renowned singer Maria Jette, who has recorded two albums of Wodehouse material.
We hope that anyone who appreciates PG Wodehouse and its wonderful stories, characters, and songs will consider attending the San Diego convention, October 20-23, and joining the Wodehouse Society. Convention registration information, a complete list of local chapters, and other society information can be found at wodehouse.org; specific questions can be directed to [email protected].
