Arcadis is to acquire Canadian architecture and engineering firm IBI Group for £561m.

IBI Group, founded in 1974, has more than 3,500 employees working in its 60 offices in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. It has a strong presence in the UK, operating from seven offices across the country. In the UK it has been involved in a wide range of projects and provided services to major clients such as National Highways and Transport for London.

According to Arcadis, the acquisition will strengthen its digital proposition as well as its presence in North America.

It intends to create a separate global business area called “Intelligence” – existing ones are Resilience, Places and Mobility – comprising the combined IBI Intelligence group and Arcadis Gen. This part of the business will offer software and systems design, systems integration, digital customer solutions and innovation capabilities. With this acquisition, Arcadis will double its software developers.

“The combination of IBI Group Buildings with Arcadis Places creates a global leader in planning, designing and building the resilient cities of tomorrow,” adds Arcadis.

The acquisition is unanimously supported by IBI Group’s Board of Directors and IBI Group’s largest shareholder, IBI Group Management Company, but is subject to a number of approvals. The transaction is expected to be finalized in the second half of 2022.

Arcadis CEO Peter Oosterveer said: “The acquisition of IBI Group marks an important step in implementing Arcadis’ business strategy. Together with the IBI Group management team, we have big ambitions. Our shared vision to digitally transform our industries and provide our customers with new and innovative technology solutions sets us apart from our peers.

“By combining our talents and expertise, I am confident that we will strengthen our role as a digital leader in our industry and simultaneously grow and improve our geographic footprint.”

IBI Group CEO Scott Stewart said, “As a combined force, we will bring IBI Group’s intelligence and technology initiatives to Arcadis’ vast global footprint. We will establish the largest and most diverse architectural firm in North America and potentially the world. Additionally, we will expand the capabilities and depth of the IBI Group in environmental infrastructure and services, amplifying our ability to support our clients’ missions for sustainable cities and communities.
